This project decreases CO₂ emissions by installing a biomass boiler instead of a gas boiler for a new paper machine at a pulp and paper mill in Caieiras, Brazil. The project promotes using ash as fertilizer in agriculture and forestry, reuses biomass residues, and creates local jobs.
The biomass boiler fed with renewable biomass and biomass residues from external agriculture, forestry, and own production processes supplies a paper mill that produces around 100k tonnes of tissue paper articles per year with constant heat for the production process.
Additionally, the project helps promote innovative and efficient technologies and generates local income due to the construction and maintenance of the plant, the collection, transport, and sale of biomass residues, and services associated with the management of biomass residues. Moreover, the project helps avoid emissions from the uncontrolled burning of biomass residues, thus reducing GHG emissions and the risk of wildfires.
Carbon finance is crucial to provide the necessary means to improve the technical reliability and efficiency of the first-of-its-kind technology in Brazil. Furthermore, it also funds the building of a renewable-energies educational center at the mill that will educate employees and community members.
