Methane Capture and Electricity Production in Wastewater Treatment Plant

Bulgaria

Carbon Avoidance

Ozone Depleting Substance Destruction

The project reduces methane emissions by capturing methane produced in the Kubratovo wastewater treatment plant and subsequently supplies it to the new CHP gas engines to generate electricity and heat. This system substitutes the plant’s electricity purchases from the grid and its diesel fuel usage.

Methane Capture and Electricity Production in Wastewater Treatment Plant

The project at the Kubratovo Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sofia collects biogas to cogenerate electricity and heat. It foresees the rehabilitation and construction of several technical elements of the plant such as a sludge pumping station and circulation unit, new digesters, and a biogas withdrawal, utilization, and mixing system to get the sludge treatment process up to the modern advanced standards.

The plant produces biogas by feeding a mix of biomass waste and water into the digesters where microorganisms break down the biodegradable materials under oxygen-free conditions in anaerobic digestion processes over a period of 8 weeks. Three combined heating power plants (CHP) combust the gas and provide a thermal energy generation capacity of around 45MW. By reducing the use of fossil fuels and using renewable energy sources, biogas plants cut GHG emissions.
