Clean Drinking Water and Efficient Cookstoves
Firewood is still among the primary fuels for cooking in Mexico - despite its inefficiency. By adopting more efficient cookstoves, households reduce the amount of fuel wood used for daily cooking needs. The project reduces emissions as a high proportion of fuel wood comes from non-renewable sources.
About the project
In Mexico, the usage of firewood for cooking is prevalent: About 80% of rural families rely on firewood as their primary energy source, and the majority of them still use open fires, which are inefficient in terms of fuel utilization. By switching to the higher efficiency cook stoves, households lower the amount of fuel wood they must consume for daily cooking needs. As a large amount of fuel wood is derived from non-renewable sources, the supported initiative lowers emissions from the non-renewable extraction of wood.
In addition to reducing emissions, which will aid in taking immediate action to address climate change (SDG 13), the project supports several other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
