Improved Cookstoves in Mexico

Clean Drinking Water and Efficient Cookstoves

Firewood is still among the primary fuels for cooking in Mexico - despite its inefficiency. By adopting more efficient cookstoves, households reduce the amount of fuel wood used for daily cooking needs. The project reduces emissions as a high proportion of fuel wood comes from non-renewable sources.

Improved Cookstoves in Mexico

About the project

In Mexico, the usage of firewood for cooking is prevalent: About 80% of rural families rely on firewood as their primary energy source, and the majority of them still use open fires, which are inefficient in terms of fuel utilization. By switching to the higher efficiency cook stoves, households lower the amount of fuel wood they must consume for daily cooking needs. As a large amount of fuel wood is derived from non-renewable sources, the supported initiative lowers emissions from the non-renewable extraction of wood.

In addition to reducing emissions, which will aid in taking immediate action to address climate change (SDG 13), the project supports several other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • No Poverty (SDG 1): In Mexico, households devote up to 20% of their income on firewood purchases. Using the stoves reduces the amount of firewood required by households by as much as 58% compared to the baseline scenario. Moreover, it allows rural households to save time collecting fuel, freeing up time to pursue income-generating activities.
  • Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3): Traditional cooking methods involve open fires that result in emissions of local pollutants such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter in often poorly ventilated rooms. Using the upgraded cook stoves reduces this indoor pollution, in turn decreasing respiratory health issues in rural Mexico.
  • Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7): Improved cook stoves use simple design enhancements to burn biomass fuel more efficiently, reducing the amount of firewood used and therefore money spent for energy.
  • Life on Land (SDG 15): Households depend on wood or other solid fuels to meet their energy demands, with much of the wood sourced from non-renewable sources. Thus, this enhanced cook stoves initiative aids minimizing the harm to biodiversity caused by deforestation.
