Carbon Removal
Afforestation, Reforestation and Nature Preservation
The community-based project uses carbon finance to combine carbon sequestration with improvements of rural livelihoods through local, farmer-led agroforestry projects. Participating farmers also plant indigenous species to conserve the forest, biodiversity, and its role as a watershed.
Carbon finance incentivizes sustainable agroforestry and farmer-led reforestation in the Alimugonza and Ongo Forests in Uganda. Since the project started in 2003, it has managed to reforest 6,512ha. The farmers are encouraged to reforest and implement community-based forest management plans to increase forest protection. Therefore, farmers use agroforestry of mixed native and naturalized tree species on smallholder lands to create additional income. As the economic value of the forest increases, the farmers are incentivized to conserve it. Furthermore, the diversification of income sources through improved land management and agroforestry is increasing the communities' resilience and reducing the dependency on single income sources.
Moreover, the measures not only protect trees and biodiversity but are also of vast importance for water management as the forest acts as the only source of water. Additionally, it connects the different protected areas, allowing wildlife to migrate through this natural corridor.
