Ethanol Biofuel Cookstoves in Kenya

Carbon Avoidance

Clean Drinking Water and Efficient Cookstoves

Improved and cleaner cookstoves running on renewable, denatured ethanol replace cooking on firewood and coal. This action reduces GHG emissions, prevents illegal deforestation caused by firewood collection, and significantly improves indoor air quality leading to fewer respiratory illnesses.

Ethanol Biofuel Cookstoves in Kenya

In large parts of the world, cooking is still conducted with firewood or coal over a more or less open stove. This is not only inefficient and causes GHG emissions while contributing to deforestation but also causes indoor air pollution which is a main driver of respiratory illnesses in these countries.

This project distributes improved cookstoves in Kenya that run on renewable denatured ethanol that creates no smoke when being combusted. Furthermore, the higher energy efficiency of the biofuel-based cookstoves reduces the time needed to collect firewood or coal by 20-40 minutes per day (1L of ethanol has been found to fuel a cookstove for the same time as 4kg of charcoal). As this task is in Kenya mainly carried out by women and children, the project significantly reduces the time spent on household activities which can be reallocated towards education or income-generating activities to further improve their livelihoods.
