Technology-based Carbon Removal
Biochar is a carbon-rich substance produced from natural and plant material in a pyrolysis process. It offers numerous benefits for agricultural soils and farmers and persists in soils for several hundred and even thousands of years. Thereby, biochar creates a permanent sink for its carbon content.
This project promotes biochar production and applies it to agricultural soils as a long-term sink for atmospheric carbon. Biochar is produced from wood chips or crop residues in a pyrolysis process to sequester the plant's carbon. Applied to soils, the substance is highly resistant to decomposition by microorganisms and abiotic factors and persists for several hundred and even thousands of years. Thus, it is a potent sink for the carbon within the raw material. Moreover, it reduces emissions of other harmful gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, or ammonia. Biochar also increases soil fertility and drought resilience by improving the retention of nutrients and water and humus build-up.
The project uses proceeds from the income of carbon finance to reduce the price of biochar while guaranteeing producers of biochar an adequate return. Furthermore, the program promotes other uses of biochar for urban gardening or as a lightweight insulation material for construction.
