Unlike traditional bricks in Malawi that bake for 24h requiring lots of firewood, the DURABRIC bricks made of earth, sand, cement, and water are mechanically compressed and do not need baking. This process saves up to 14 trees per newly built house and thus significantly reduces CO₂ emissions.
The award-winning project's innovative technology mechanically compresses bricks on site from earth, sand, cement, and water. This approach has the potential to substantially scale sustainable construction in Malawi, all of Africa, and beyond. As this new type of bricks does not require baking, it saves approximately 14 trees for each newly built house. These trees would otherwise be burned as firewood for the bricks. Hence, this technology significantly reduces one of the main drivers of deforestation.
The project also provides training to local manufacturers and builders, improving housing quality and creating skilled manufacturing jobs in rural communities. Thus, by conserving habitats and reducing deforestation, providing new sources of income, and creating more sustainable and safer buildings in Malawi, the project contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals. Recognizing the societal benefits, the project has been awarded the Better Society 2023 Built Environment Award.
